May 2nd is Community Wildfire Preparedness Day!

Thank you everyone for all your efforts to make our community a FireSmart Community.

Today, May 2nd, is Wildfire Community Preparedness Day which is a day that is part of a national campaign focused on encouraging neighbourhoods to work to increase their resilience to wildfire.  This focus is also very much in keeping with the City of Kelowna’s Neighbours Day (May 3rd) that encourages residents to rediscover that spirit of connection in their community … and having some fun while making these connections.

To mark these days, we are announcing the start to our 3rd Summer FireSmart Challenge.  See: FireSmart | Quail Ridge Residents Association

This monthly contest is open to everyone in the community who has worked to “firesmart” their home.  It runs from May to the end of October and entering is easy:  send us your name, address and a “before” and an “after” photo of what you did to “firesmart” your property to qrraexec@gmail.com and you could win a $100 Nester’s Gift card (drawn monthly).

The summer challenges, started 2 years ago, have been a good success story in that each year, we have seen almost a doubling of participants.  Last year, we had almost 10% of all households in Quail Ridge participate! So tell your neighbours about the 2026 Summer Challenge and encourage everyone to learn about FireSmart so we can double these numbers again.

Also, stay tuned! Our FireSmart Committee is currently working on bringing back our big community FireSmart clean up events.   The one we ran last year to "firesmart" Country Club Trail was a great success.  These big clean ups usually bring out a lot of people from the community to work on specific areas to reduce the risk of damage to our neighbourhood from wildfires.  And … they are fun!

so ... Be safe.  Be FireSmart.
