Well, fire season is upon us.
Our thoughts are with everyone in Peachland and other areas impacted by wild fires and we are very grateful to the hard-working fire fighters, first responders and emergency services personnel who are risking their own lives to save lives and get these fires under control.
The FireSmart team encourages everyone to take the time to review their evacuation kits.
The following resources have a wealth of information to help you plan:

Don’t forget to add a reminder to bring in deck cushions, propane tanks etc. if a wildfire is threatening our community. See the FireSmart Wildfire Preparedness Guide for more ideas: PreparedBC Wildfire Preparedness Guide (gov.bc.ca)

Finally, as the July 9th Directors’ meeting minutes highlight, the FireSmart team has been working on the specifics of the 2024 FireSmart Plan. The goal is to set up the processes for 2 regularly scheduled clean ups per year: a Fall Cleanup with the Okanagan Golf Course in late October and a Spring Clean up in April.
As well, the team is very excited about working with Dr. Mathieu Bourbonnais, from UBCO’s Centre for Wildfire Coexistence, who has graciously offered our community several fire sensors that will link in with UBCO’s exiting network. On June 18th, members of the team met with Mathieu as well as people from the City’s Urban Forests department and Captain Stantic (our FireSmart Rep) and did a “walk about” and discussed the optimal placement locations for the sensors. We will keep you apprised.
