FireSmart Calendar of Events - May

Updated: Jun 3

May 1                 “Future-proofing the Okanagan”

UBCO has invited Quail Ridge residents to join others at it’s Innovation Centre at 4:30pm on May 1st for a presentation and networking event entitled "Future-proofing the Okanagan".

Presenters will discuss their leading-edge work to ensure that communities are prepared for future wildfires, have access to more sustainable building practices, and are resilient in the face of a changing environment?

May 4th                 WildFire Community Preparedness Day

Say hello to your QRRA FireSmart Committee!

The FireSmart Committee will be down at Nesters, handing out information about firesmart safety, and celebrating Wildfire Community Preparedness Day AND Kelowna’s 9th Annual Neighbour Day.

June 2 Kelowna FireSmart Community Chipping Program

As we all work to firesmart our properties, we expect that most people will simply hall their own large fire debris cuttings to the Kelowna landfill.

However, some of us cannot.

If this is you, we invite you to add your large fire debris to one of the FireSmart Committee members' fire debris so it can be chipped by the Kelowna FireSmart Community Chipping Program.

Date: June 1st and no later than June 2nd

Location: See map, below. Call or email Jackie Venter to arrange your drop off: (250-688-7234, jackieventer68@gmail.com) (This location is actually the rear of 2245 Capistrano Drive that backs onto Country Club Drive).

Important:

Large fire debris includes your cedars, junipers, mugo pine, conifer branches and prunings (spruce, fir, pine) LESS THAN 8 INCHES in diameter.

Remove roots, dirt, rocks, gravel to ensure that the debris will not damage the chipper.

Do not include your deciduous leafy tree branches, shrubs, grasses, flowers, bulk pine needles. Use your green bin for these materials.
